Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to prepare, deploy and maintain a Debian desktop estate to replace Windows, and set up a useful everyday Debian server (files, printing, light directory). Training runs on Debian. A session on Ubuntu (and Ubuntu LTS server) can be arranged on request; the programme stays the same.
Audience and context
For teams driving a Windows exit (local authority, public body, SME). Goal: operational autonomy: clean installs, light industrialisation, safe updates, documentation so the estate does not depend on one person.
Programme
Day 1: Debian foundation and a reference workstation
- Mapping a Windows → Linux migration: desktops, scope, blocking apps, phasing
- Debian: releases, support, desktop vs server, why we use it in training
- Guided workstation install (BIOS/UEFI, partitions, user, sudo)
aptpackages: search, install, update, purge, repositories and good practice- Users, groups, permissions, sudoers: mental model for an IT estate
- Basic networking: IP, DNS, optional proxy, diagnostics (
ip,ss, journal) - Workshop: build a minimal “staff workstation” image (desktop, browser, LibreOffice, IT tools)
Day 2: Desktop fleet, printing, identity
- Repeatable deployment: preseed / golden image, cloning checklist, first-boot pitfalls
- Printing and scanning (CUPS): print servers, drivers, user rights
- Joining the existing world: local accounts vs directory (LDAP / Active Directory Linux clients)
- File shares: SMB/CIFS on the client, mounts, permissions, business folder cases
- Updates and lifecycle:
unattended-upgrades, maintenance windows, pragmatic rollback - Desktop security: disk encryption overview, lock screen, basic firewall, service accounts
- Workshop: “10 desktops for one department” (deploy, print, share, user account)
Day 3: Useful server, operations and migration plan
- First Debian server: hardened SSH, updates, minimal monitoring (logs, simple alerts)
- Light virtualisation with KVM/QEMU: why test desktops and servers in VMs before the real estate
- Backups: what to save (user data, configs), frequency, restore test
- Inventory and documentation: what to write so a replacement can take over
- Remaining Windows business apps: strategies (web, container, app VM, open source alternative)
- Build your migration plan: pilot, end-user training, go-live criteria, rollback
- Final workshop: staged roadmap for your organisation (or a typical authority / SME case)
Method
Heavy hands-on on VMs. Bring a list of business apps and printers if you can: we use them as the thread. Recommended group size: 4 to 8 people.
